For this investigation we are going to keep in mind the principle of "The dog that didn't bark." The story appeared in "Silver Blaze," one of 12 in the cycle collected as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It was a curious incident upon which Sherlock Holmes commented.
Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."
It was indeed curious. When something does not happen, which should have if the circumstances have been correctly reported, something remains unknown. Many of the questions below take exactly this form. Sign up for our newsletter, IMAGE, to receive the answers ahead of the news releases which will also be going out.
